If you've ever wondered why my wool coats come in funny sizes like XS Long and S Long, it all comes back to one very awkward-shaped dog. His name was Logan.
When winter rolled around, I wanted to buy him a nice warm coat. Easy enough, right? Wrong.
Everything I bought was either too short or too big. If it fitted his chest, it barely covered his back. If it covered his back, it was hanging off him everywhere else. There seemed to be this whole group of dogs that sat between sizes, and nobody was making coats for them.
So I made my own.
It Started With My Nana
Around the same time, my Nana passed away.
Among the things I was given were some of her beautiful wool blankets. They weren't doing anyone any good folded up in a cupboard, so I decided to turn one into something that would actually be used every winter, given I couldn't find the right fit!
Logan became my very first model.
That first coat wasn't made to start a business. It was simply made because I loved my dog and wanted him to be warm.
The "Itchy Blanket"
Now I have to admit something. When I was little, I hated wool blankets. I used to call them "itchy blankets." I have eczema, and natural wool against my skin has never been my best friend.
So when I started making wool dog coats, I knew there was one thing I wanted to change. Every coat would be lined with fleece.
Now your dog gets all the warmth and insulation that natural wool provides, but without the itchiness.
Honestly? They're toasty.
Like... ridiculously toasty. Exactly what you want on those freezing winter mornings.
Then Along Came Petal...
Fast forward a few years and Logan was sick, then along came Petal.
She's somehow even longer than Logan was and so all the coats I made for him, were to short for her! Apparently I have a type. Long dogs.
After making custom coats for so many long-bodied dogs, I realised the same thing kept happening. People would message saying, "My dog is too big for the XS but too small for the Small."
Or...
"The Small fits their body but it's too wide." Instead of making every single one as a custom order, I decided to create proper in-between sizes. That's where my Long range was born.
Meet the In-Between Sizes
Not every dog fits neatly into standard sizing. Some dogs are built like little sausages, others are lean and athletic. Some are simply... longer than average.
That's why you'll find:
- XS Long
- S Long
- M Long
They're designed for those awkward in-between dogs that deserve a coat that actually fits properly. Because your dog's coat should cover their whole back, not stop halfway.
More Than Just Warm
I love that these coats have a story. Every time I make one, I think about how it all started with Logan and one of Nana's blankets. What began as a solution for my own dog has kept hundreds of dogs warm over the years. Thanks to that fleece lining, hopefully none of them are calling them itchy blankets.
Sometimes the best products aren't created because someone spotted a gap in the market. Sometimes they're created because you simply couldn't find what your own dog needed. That's exactly how my wool coats came to life.
They've changed a little since Logan's first coat, but the reason behind them hasn't. I still want every dog to have a coat that fits properly, keeps them warm, and makes winter walks something to look forward to.
