In 2023, I got into plants. Like, really into plants. I didn’t know it at the time, but the very first one I brought home—an Anderson Red Philodendron—turned out to be toxic to dogs. And to humans too, if eaten… but as someone who speaks English and values their life, I was never at risk. My dog Petal, on the other hand? Not ideal.
But I didn’t return the plant. Instead, I picked up a few more philodendrons. Oops.
Luckily, Petal isn’t a chewer. She still has the first toy she came home with, totally intact, and she’s never shown any interest in eating things she shouldn’t. So I wasn’t too stressed. Still, I made sure to pop the philodendrons out of reach—just in case. It was that simple. I trust my dog around my plants, but if I didn’t? I’d be a lot more careful.
And for those of you who don’t have a plant-proof dog, there are plenty of pet-safe options out there that’ll still satisfy your inner plant parent.

-
Prayer Plant – Moves with the light and adds some drama to your shelf.
-
Staghorn Ferns – Unique and great for wall mounting.
-
Orchids – Surprisingly pet-safe and long-lasting if you treat them right.
Final Thoughts
If you’re a plant lover and a dog owner, the two don’t have to clash. It just takes a bit of planning (and possibly some higher shelves). If your dog’s a bit of a chewer, it’s worth double-checking any new plant before bringing it home. But with the right choices, your house can be lush, green, and totally safe for your four-legged shadow.
Got any plant recs your dog hasn’t tried to eat? Send them my way—Petal and I are always up for more greenery!
