My favourite animal charities

“You shouldn’t have favourites!” Except there are so many animal charities and they all do something different, it can be hard to choose. This is the list of my preferred charities to support. It doesn’t mean, if a charity isn’t mentioned, they aren’t doing incredible and worthy things, these are just the charities I like and that I personally want to shine a light on.

Chained Dog Rehab

Starting off strong with a standard dog rescue. I like Chained Dog because they have pretty high standard. High standard of who they will let foster and how trained the dog needs to be before being rehomed and they are also very honest about any issues the dog may have with anything (cats, children, other dogs) or health problems and the dogs training when rehoming. If I were to get a dog from a resuce, this would be the first rescue I go to because I know they are doing there best to ensure the dogs have some training, but they are honest about anything they have faced with the dog to which so many recues just don’t talk about.

Pet Refuge

Domestic Violence is New Zealand is pretty high. When people want to leave a DV situation, their pet is often a hinderance to there leaving. Pet Refuge was built to assist with that, to assist families in leaving their abusive situation and being able to also get there pet out.

I love this charity because I think assisting in leaving domestic violence in a first place is incredible, but I had never thought about the pets… So to help people get their pets out to is just really amazing. To ensure the humans can get out, the abuse also won’t turn on the pet and the pet ends up being abused, just an incredible charity.

Whilst yon can’t adopt a pet from Pet Refuge, your help could change the trajectory of someone’s life by helping them get out of an abusive situation so if you have spare change and you want to help then Pet Refuge need it. You aren’t just helping a pet escape an abusive situation, you are helping a family feel confident in escaping their abusive situation because their pet can get out too.

Greyhounds as Pets

Greyhounds as Pets are rehoming ex racing greyhounds. Greyhounds are such lovely, lovely dogs, most of them love people. I don’t have any experience with the breed myself, I can’t tell you the good and the bad, but I can say that every Greyhound I have met has been adopted from a rescue and they have all loved pats and been so friendly.

There are a few Greyhound resucues if that is a breed you are interested. Another one I can name is Mayhounds. I would do you own research into the breed and it suiting you and your family but if you do want a Greyhound then a resuce is the way to go.

Blind Low Vision NZ Guide Dogs

Another charity where you aren’t just helping dogs but people too! I think guide dogs in NZ are often forgotten so I wanted to shine a light! There are many different ways to support Blind Low Vision NZ Guide Dogs and one of those ways is donating, sure, but they also need puppy raisers! This can be tough if you have young kids but if you want to help, you can raise a puppy for a couple of years before it goes in for training!

I love Blind Low Vision NZ Guide Dogs because you are heling more than an animal, you are helping someone live their life to the fullest and giving them confidence and independence in a world that is a little bit harder for them. There are many ways to assist so if you want to support a charity they are definitely worth a look in!

The Animal Sanctuary

The Animal Sanctuary, as the name suggest, supports more than just dogs. In fact, they rarely have dogs. But they do get cows, horses, goats, birds, donkeys and more. The animals they resuce all have suffered some form of neglect or abuse and just need a good home! Some animals stay at The Animal Sanctuary forever whilst others need homes.

Rescuing larger animals and animals that the vet often has to come to them means the cost of rescuing them adds up pretty fast, so you can donate to them and on their website they let you know what the amount of your donation will cover from $6 for a bale of hay up to $500 as an incubator for birds.

It can be tough to choose a charity to support and there are MANY more than the 5 I have listed, these are just my personal top 5 that I like to support and why. If you want to provide a helping hand, just google pet charities for your area and I am sure you can find some local charities to support.
